What Is A Mantra

The word “mantra” has been around for a long time. We use them whenever we repeat something over and over in our mind, good or bad. Most of us have gotten into the habit of repeating mainly the bad, or let’s say the “not so empowering”. Like, “I am fat” or “I am not pretty” or “I am not good enough” and countless other phrases that are painful to list here.

Mantra’s sung or chanted in Sanskrit is a practice that began in India by the sages of the past and should be revered with high respect. But since 1960, when Maha Mantra (“Great Mantra”) was brought to the West by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and his International Society for Krishna Consciousness something happened. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (commonly known as “the Hare Krishnas”) somehow scared people in airports and tainted the understanding of what this mantra and this practice is all about.

The Hare Krishna mantra, also referred to reverentially as the Maha Mantra (“Great Mantra”), is a 16 word Vaishnava mantra which is mentioned in the Kali-Santarana Upanishad, and which from the 15th century rose to importance in the Bhakti movement following the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. To further understand the name Krishna… According to Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, one’s original consciousness and goal of life is pure love of God (Krishna).

Mantras Can Free Your Mind

The word “mantra” comes from two Sanskrit words: “Manas,” which means mind, and “trai,” which means to “free from.” Therefore, mantra, in the literal sense, means “to free from the mind.” Mantras are powerful vibration tools that can free your mind. But how? Many have said that the repetitive sounds of mantras bring about a change in consciousness. The power of mantras comes from the use of vibration to stimulate certain parts of the brain and change the brain’s chemical balance. The altered chemical makeup enables a more relaxed and extended state of consciousness to take over our minds.

Mantras Can Heal

Mantras can also be powerful healing tools, energizing prana, a form of life energy that can be transferred from individual to individual. Healers often use the transfer of prana to heal diseases or physical conditions. The power of the mantra can be concentrated on that organ to help heal it. But, this is a practice that moves us from our thoughts and shifts to “feeling” the energy of our hearts.
